The Coast of Utopia : Voyage

The play takes place in the Soviet Union during the years 1833 to 1838, and it centers on the Russian revolutionary Michael Bakunin and his aristocratic beginnings. The Bakunin family is embroiled in various love triangles and intrigues, and Michael is quickly becoming the black sheep of the family. He deserts the military and rebels against his wealthy roots, instead preferring to become a philosopher. He spends his time with other like-minded individuals as he flits from one school of thought to another in his quest to find enlightenment.

The Coast of Utopia : Shipwreck

Shipwreck begins back in Russia, in 1846, a few years after the final events in the previous Voyage. Michael Bakunin is already abroad, and the focus shifts to Alexander Herzen who finds inspiration as well as frustration in exile in Paris and London. As the revolution of 1848 unfolds outside his door, Herzen's circle and his family are profoundly affected.

The Coast of Utopia : Salvage

This is the last play in Tom Stoppard's trilogy, The Coast of Utopia. The main character is Alexander Herzen, a minor character in the earlier plays, a Russian intellectual living in London. Again, a large group of Russian intelligensia plays a role. "Salvage" follows this group's desire to see a revolution in Russia, and their attempts to facilitate this through their activities in London. The Herzen's family relationships are examined, as is Alexander Herzen's romance with his friend's (Nicholas Ogarev) wife.
